Di diffusione cosmopolita, i membri ascritti a questo gruppo di bivalvi sono particolarmente adatti a scavare nella roccia, nei gusci, nella torba, nell'argilla dura o nel fango. La maggior parte delle mwegspecie vive nella mwewzona intertidale, mentre alcune si trovano in acque più profonde.
